Draft Advert

Before attempting to make an advert to accompany my music video, I first drafted several ideas of what I'd like my advert to look like. I created a spider diagram with several sections: colour scheme, font, information and background.

From these sections, I was able to create several ideas so I have a variety to choose from. The colour scheme section consisted of blue, white and black, red black and white or purple black and white. I decided to use the purple black and white as I felt these colours contrasted the best and created a likeable appeal.

When deciding on which font to use, I referred back to my Font Experimentation task that I previously did in order to choose an approriate and fitting font for my advert. In the end, I chose the Stencil font which is the actual font used by The Stone Roses on their albums. Not only did I choose this font for that reason but for the fact is was bold and stood out against the background.

In terms of selecting the right information to go on my advert, I researched several different adverts to see what type of reoccuring information is found on them. I found from looking at different advertisements that ratings by major magazine companies such as NME are often found on these advertisements with a one word comment below the rating. Although I did not apply this to my draft advert, I will do so to my final one. I also found that the release date of the product that is been advertised is normally on the advertisement along with a bold picture or statement to attract an audience.

Choosing a background image was quite difficult for me to do. I decided to use a photo from my photoshoot so that people can relate this image back to the music video and recognise that the advertisement is advertising that music video. I manipulated the image so it wasn't a plain, boring image and would therefore attract a better audience.

Overall, I think this advertisement needs a lot more work done to it for it to be accepted into a professional music magazine. For this, I will try experimenting with the advert before claiming it as my final advert.

Draft Digipak

This is the rough cut for my digipak to go alongside my music video. Overall, I like the finished product however, I do think there are certain aspects that can be changed to improve my digipak.

Firstly, after looking at the finished product, I do not agree with the colour scheme. I think for the type of track I am using this digipak for, the colour scheme is too bright and bold. I need a more toned down, darker colour to portray the theme of isolation.

Secondly, the template for this digipak is quite complicated and once I'd matched the images up to the co-ordinating lines, the overall product still looked out of place and some parts bigger than others.

In order to improve my digipak, I am going to draft up a few different ideas for a change in colour scheme and try to find a more appropriate template.

Rough Cut Three

This is my third rough cut for my music video to the track 'I Wanna Be Adored' by The Stone Roses. This is my final rough cut for my video and the next edit will be my final edit and the overall product.

I have adjusted this rough cut by removing the soft edges from several clips but leaving them on others so that the video is not the same throughout and gives it that variation. On review, I noticed that the soft edge look is still causing continuity problems in the video. For my final edit, I will try to address this problem yet again.

Whilst researching video effects, I came across several on different youtube channels. I have several in mind that I will add to my final edit to give it a more professional look and make it more interestiung as opposed to bland.

Rough Cut Two

Above is my second rough cut of my music video. In comparison to my first rough cut, I believe this second rough cut shows more of my advanced skills when editing footage. Throughout the video, I have gone for a soft edged look to give the video a less edgy look and more professional. However, I have encountered several problems with adding this effect as I have numerous overlaid footage and the soft edges displace some of this footage, making the video look jumpy rather than smooth and I will try to fix this problem.

As previously mentioned when reviewing my first rough cut, I managed to fix the unnecessary black flash at 0:38 by tightening the clips up and removing the cross dissolve transition. I also went through every single clip of footage and removed any dashed lines at the top that were causing a problem for me. I have also managed to line the overlaid footage up correctly so that they fit however, the soft edges are making this very difficult and when reviewing this second rough cut, they are still not lined up which they appeared to be when using the editing software. Some clips are still out of sync due to me moving a lot of clips around to stop any unnecessary flashing but I will fix this problem in my third rough cut.

With my second rough cut, I wanted to achieve a rough version of what the finish video would look like and I have achieved that. There are still several aspects and issues that need changing and addressing but once done, I believe the video will come together and eventually turn out to be as I planned.

Rough Cut One

This is the first rough cut of my own music video to the track "I Wanna Be Adored" by The Stone Roses. For a first rough cut, I think the final product has turned out well. I have managed to construct the main story line that I wanted to convey within the video and I have also managed to create a sense of curiosity as to why the character is walking and why he looks so sad.

Reviewing the video, I can spot several aspects that I want to change. At 0:38 there is an unnecessary black flash that, during my second rough cut, I will fix so that the flash does not appear. Secondly, on several clips, a white dotted line appears in the left hand corner of the footage which I will crop out so that in my second rough cut, the line will no appear. On several of the clips where I have overlaid another bit of footage, the two parts do not match up, showing one clip playing on spare black space, as seen at 1:18 when the singer's head is seen just above the top end of the narrative clip. At 2:46, the clips are out of sync with the though beats that are incorporated in the track so this is a further issue I will have to fix. I'd also like to add several different video effects to several parts of the video and for this I will research how to do this and where I can get such effects from.

Once I have addressed the problems that I have discussed above, hopefully my second rough cut will give an ample idea of the overall product that I am trying to achieve.

Filming Difficulites

Throughout the filming process, I encountered numerous problems and difficulites that affected my filming in some way or another. I did try to over come these problems by finding solutions or re-structuring my filming around the problem which in most cases was possible.

The first major problem I came across was been able to obtain a successful tracking shot. In order to achieve a professional and high standard tracking shot, a dolly and track is needed. Although this sort of equipment was available to me through my college, the equipment was quite bulky, large and heavy and I did not have transport that would be appropriate for such equipment. I tried to overcome this problem by using a makeshift track and dolly through the use of a wheelchair and scaffolding planks. I did manage to achieve a smooth surface on which to run the wheelchair but I could not strap the tripod and camera onto the wheelchair so that the footage would be smooth and not jerky. After two failed attempts at achieving a tracking shot, I simply changed the type of shot and used several long shots that when edited will create an elliptical effect.

The second problem that occured was the battery on the camera. Having fully charged the camera the night before I filmed at my first location, I expected the camera to last at least three hours. However, I did not realise that I had been using the camera alot to take pictures with, which affected the battery life and therefore I was unable to record as much footage as I would have liked. I did manage to achieve good footage which I think will still work and will be sufficent enough for my video and I live very close to the first location so if I need to re-record, I can't see it been a problem.

A further problem that I encountered was the weather. The deadline for filming my music video was set in Autumn when naturally, the weather is damp, dark, winding and consists of rainfall. The previous night of rainfall affected my filming at the second location at High Farm near Elwick. The field was a crucial part of my storyboard and was needed. The grass was soaked with rain, creating a muddy field in which me and the main character sank into. To overcome this problem, I flattened out a cardboard box and lay it on the grass, helping to creating a protective barrier between the mud and the tripod on which the camera stood. With this done, I did manage to achieve the main shot I wanted from the field which I am pleased about.

Recce Shots

Hurworth Burn

This was my first location in when recording my music video. The location itself was ideal for the themes in my video; dereliction, alone and reflection.

The photo to the left shows the path that goes over the railway bridge. I used this part of the location to try and film the tracking shot which did not work. However, I did manage to get one of my original shots from this part of the location that is shown on my storyboard.

The photo to the right shows the photopath from the bridge that leads to Stockton. I did want to use this part of the location as it gave a sense of dereliction due to the trees ecompassing the path however, as you can see, the path was very muddy so instead, I took several photos that i could potentially use on my digipak or advertisement.

To the left is a photo that shows the railway bridge at Hurworth Burn. The bridge in itself is a statement and I found it very appealing.

High Farm, Elwick

My second location in which I filmed was High Farm, located just outside of Elwick. The location was owned by my Dad so permission to use the location was easily enough to obtain.

Third Day of Filming - Hartlepool Sixth Form College

On Wednesday 14th November, I along with my chosen band filmed in the TV Studio that is situated within the college I attend. Overall, the day went according to plan and I managed to get enough footage to use within the time frame I had set for shooting that day. The members of the band co-operated brilliantly with my directing which aided in obtaining professional and high quality footage.

In order to use the studio, I had to book a week in advance and before doing so, I had to ensure that all members of my composed band were available. When the day for filming came, they all arrived at our proposed meeting place on time and enthusiastic. We all worked together as a team and distributed amongst ourselves individual roles. Each of the band members ensured they had their own instruments that they were to play during the filming.

In terms of mise en scene, all band members attended the filming day wearing appropriate clothing to fit around my music genre, alternative rock. They also got into the right frame of mind and acted as though they were an actual rock band. Within this scheduled shooting time, I also experimented with a few different techniques and shots that were not in my planned storyboard. For one shot, I decided to face the lights towards the camera, creating a glow effect around the centered singer which I thought was a very good effect. I also managed to get a couple of pan shots which worked out very well and look professional.

On reflection, I think the day went very well. Everyone involved worked together and co-operated which helped me keep within my time frame for filming. I achieved some very good footage and experimental shots that I think will look very professional when it comes to editing them into my overall music video.

Second Day of Filming - High Farm

On Sunday 11th November, I recorded at my second location in Elwick. This location is my Dad's property so it was easy to get permission to use the location and to film on it. The weather for the day was still dry but quite gloomy and I had not taken into account how the damp air would effect my location.

When we arrived at the location, I found that the field we needed to use was very muddy due to the dampness in the air and the rainfall over night. We tried to fix the problem by laying thick cardboard on the grass and standing the tripod and camera on the cardboard. Fortunately, the field was not too muddy that we would sink into it when trying to walk therefore I did manage to capture the majority of the footage that I wanted to capture.

I did, however, have to tweek some of my planned shots shown in my storyboard due to the weather and the failure of tracking shots. Instead, I replaced tracking shots with shots of the character in the same area but moving direction several times. I will then, when editing, merge these clips together to create an elliptical effect.

Considering the weather situation, I managed to obtain sufficient footage to use in my video and I doubt I'll have to re-record any scenes from this location. My next location will be in the college in which I study and due to the recording been successful in this location, this means I will be able to swiftly move on to my next location without any problems.

First Day of Filming - Final Attempt (Hurworth Burn)

Instead of recording Wednesday 7th November, I decided to record Saturday 10th November instead as this meant I had a full day of recording and the weather forecast said it was to be dry and sunny which would be an ideal environment to film in, instead of dark and damp.

I managed to obtain a sufficient amount of footage from this location and also took a lot of photos suitable for my digipak and advertisement. The day, overall, was ideal in many aspects for my recording. The weather stayed dry, mild and sunny allowing the recording to go smoothly without any difficulties due to weather. The location was easy to work around and had a very good view spot for my opening shot, a pan shot from right to left of a lake. My actor was also very enthusiastic about the recording and helped to input certain ideas into my recording that I had not thought of myself.

I did, however, encounter a problem obtaining tracking shots. When I returned to College on Tuesday 6th November, I inquired about using the track and dolly. The college were more than happy for me to use the equipment however, the equipment was quite large and would not fit into my car so insted I tried to improvise with a wheelchair again but this still did not work to due a bumpy surface which I tried to avoid by using wood underneath the wheelchair.

Overall, I am pleased with the footage that I got from this location and it will be used in my final edit. Since I have successfully filmed in this location, this will allow me to move onto the next location without any problems or difficulties of re-recording in this location.

First day of Filming - Second Attempt (Hurworth Burn)

Today, Saturday the 3rd of November, I encountered further problems with filming my music video. Firstly, my actor was ill but still agreed to participate in the filming. However, later on, my actor could no longer participate as he was feeling very ill and needed to return home, leaving me without my main character for the narrative part of my video.

Secondly, having checked the weather forecast, it was yet again was gloomy and dark but it was more workable as it was dry. I did attempt to film in the short time my actor was available but the natural light started to disappear and the whole setting became dark and too difficult to film in.

Thirdly, I still could not find a suitable way to construct a tracking shot without a track and dolly. I tried laying a piece of flat cardboard on the ground to create a barrier between the bumpy surface and the wheels of the wheelchair however, this technique was useless as the cardboard was not thick enough, resulting in the footage been disorientated and unusable.

I return to college on Tuesday 6th November in which I will immediately ask permission to use the track and dolly as it is a vital piece of equipment needed for my music video as the majority of shots within my video are tracking shots. I will also try to do my third attempt at filming on Wednesday 7th November, providing the weather is workable and suitable. I am, however, struggling to get my footage at the moment as problems keep occurring and I have a deadline for my final edit on Wednesday 28th November, adding a lot more pressure onto me.

Test Footage

Before shooting any footage for my video. I decide to practice certain shots that I wanted to use in my video. In this shot, the idea was to capture the character walking away and to see how I could frame this around further footage that I would later overlay.

I like this shot but I think when filming for my actual video, the character will be walking towards the camera instead of away from it to give more emotion to the video. I will also record the character walking several different times towards the camera in different spots and then by using a fade effect, will merge the clips to show that the character has been walking over a period of time.

First day of Filming - First Attempt (Hurworth Burn)

Today,Saturday 27th October, was my first planned date in shooting the scenes with the narrative. I had great difficulty achieving this as a track and dolly was needed for tracking shots however, the only track and dolly available to me for use was already booked out by another student from my college. I tried to improvise by using a wheelchair, securing the tripod and camera onto the chair and simply pushing the chair along. This, however, did not work. The surface of the ground was very bumpy, resulting in the video footage been jerky and no good for use.

To add to this problem, the weather was quite gloomy and dark. The main theme set around my video is a colourful, sunset theme. I know this is very hard to achieve, especially since I am filming during Winter, but the natural light was far too dark to make out any facial features and it made the scenery look dull and plain.

I plan to film again next Saturday, the 3rd of November. I shall check the weather forecast in advance to ensure that a necessary amount of natural light is available for me to work with. I will also, in the meantime, think of different ways to capture a tracking shot without using a track and dolly. If this is not possible, I will have to wait until I return to college on the 6th of November to book out their track and dolly to use.

Photoshoot

In order to create an advertisement promoting the band and their track, I had to organise a photoshoot to obtain suitable images to use for advertising purpose. Throughout the photoshoot, I tried to capture a continuous theme of dereliction and loneliness.

Looking back at the photo's shown above, I believe I have managed to carry this theme throughout the images and I have obtain several different photo's that caught my eye to use in my advertisement.

Digipak Experimentation

This is my first attempt at using Photoshop to experiment with different digipak covers. For this cover, I took inspiration from the original cover for the Stone Roses' album called "The Stone Roses". I did try to create my own background using the brush tool however, I found it very difficult to get the paint splatters' to look professional and resorted to using a image from google images that I significantly manipulated however, everything in my final digipak will be my own work. I used several techniques in this image such as pattern overlay, a sponge filter, adjusted the brightness and contrast and used a glow around the text. I particularly like the pattern overlay as it gives the background a bubble effect and would be a potential technique that I would like to use on my own digipak.

This is my second attempt at creating my own digipak cover. The background for the digipak is birdseye view of central Manchester. I decided to use this idea as when looking at the album art for The Stone Roses' album 'The Stone Roses" the background looks like an birdseye view of a city and so I decided to apply this theory and used Manchester as is is the hometown of The Stone Roses. Firstly, I adjusted the size image to a 12cm by 12cm as these are the
dimensions for a digipak and you can see this change significantly between the original image (top) and the finished image (bottom). I then decided to change the colour balance to purples and magenta as oppose to the greens and blacks of the original image to give it a bit more colour and appeal. Finally, I adjusted the brightness and contrast to give this finished sharp background which I think contrasts very well against the bold text to which I added a slight glow around the edges and applied a white and grey colour scheme to help it stand out against the background.

To the left is my third attempt at using photoshop to manipulate images and creating a digipak image. As you can see, these two images differ a lot as I spent quite a bit of time experimenting with this image to try and create a unique look which I think I have achieved. I first started by sticking with the paint splatter idea took from The Stone Roses' first album as I find this look very appealing. I then decided to change the colour scheme as I have already created an image with a blue and red theme. I done this by using the colour balance tool and adjusting the colours
to a orange and purple scheme. I like these two colours together as I think they contrast well together and stand out. Once the colours had been adjusted, I then decided to use the filter tool again and used the patchwork filter which I think worked very well in the end. I then used the "plane crash" text which worked very well with the theme of the image and changed the colour of the text to a medium black to stand out against the background. For the text, I added an effect called 'stroke' to give the text a bold outline and then adjusted the opacity so the outline was not too black to displace the overall effect of the text. In this image, I like the use of the filter and think I will be using this technique in my own digipak.

Above is my final attempt at using photoshop to create a digipak image. Between the four attempts I have done, this final attempt is my favourite. I used the filter 'cutout' for this image which changed the image dramatically giving it a whole new look which I find very appealing. I also used a bevel and emboss technique on this image to help the image bulk out and give it a more 3D effect. The colour scheme fits very well with the ideas I have in creating my own digipak and I think they contrast very well and give the image a warm tone. For the text, I used the font  'Old Press' which I downloaded from DaFont and I think it has fit very well with the colour scheme of this image. As I was only experimenting with images briefly, I did not download the original image and therefore can not upload the original to show the comparison.

Font Experimentation

In order to select the appropriate font for my music video, I first had to research into different types of font and experiment with them. Above is my finished font experimentation. The theme throughout my font experimentation was a chunky, stencil font similar to that used in the original logo for The Stone Roses. However, I did not want exactly the same font as I wanted to put my own personal spin on the video.

From the fonts I experimented with, I have several possible choices for my video. I particularly like Warton as it is a very bold font and stands out, capturing the attention of the viewer. 84 Rock is another font that I quite like as it gives a shabby yet dark look which could apply to the meaning of my video.

I will decide on the final font when it comes to designing my Digipak. A further idea I had was using two different fonts if I can't decide on one font or if it would appeal more using two different fonts; one for the title of the band and one for the title of the song.

Song Choice - I Wanna Be Adored (The Stone Roses)

I Wanna Be Adored by The Stone Roses on Grooveshark

Above is the track that I am using for my own music video by The Stone Roses called I Wanna Be Adored. Personally, this is one of my favorite songs and I love the bassline intro. In relation to the meaning behind the lyrics, I believe the song is about an individual who has the devil inside of him hence "I don't have to sell my soul, he's already in me" which is a common phrase about selling your soul to the devil if you have done wrong. "I Wanna Be Adored" could relate to the individual wanting to be forgiven for his sins and I will apply this concept to my own music video, linking it into the theme of drug abuse and isolation.

Below is the original video for the track I Wanna Be Adored by The Stone Roses. For my own video, I have took a lot of inspiration from the original and I particularly like the whole purple tone to the video which I would like to try and apply to my own.

Inspiration - Oasis

Oasis were an alternative rock band formed in Manchester in 1991. The band was formed by Liam Gallagher,  Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs, Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan, Tony McCarroll and Noel Gallagher joined later on. Their album "What's The Story Morning Glory" was rated the best album of the 90s.
I chose Oasis as inspiration for my own music video not only because of my personal music taste and that I rate them very highly myself but because of their image, their britpop style, their music and overall, their achievements and impact on the alternative rock genre. Influenced mainly by The Beatles, Oasis took inspiration from them and incorporated their ideas and style into their own songs. In many Oasis songs such as Supersonic and D'you know what I mean, lyrical references to The Beatles are made to show their personal love and respect for that band.

Above is the music video for "Morning Glory" by the band. I particularly like this video as it shows Liam as the domineering character of the band, showing his appeal as a frontman for the band. The video also shows the band in their casual style of sitting around jamming together, another aspect that I will try to apply to my own music video. The lighting and camera angles are varied and appropriate in this video and I like alot of the camera angles used in the video and will hopefully be able to use them in my own video.

Style is a major aspect within a music video. In their younger days, Oasis always came across as a common background band with their adidas tracksuits and rebellious attitude however, towards the ends of their final years together, the band adopted a more sophisticated look and Liam Gallagher now has his own clothing range called "Pretty Green", a name from which inspiration came from The Jam. The main reason I find Oasis so appealing is because of their style and attitude and I want to apply this aspect to my own music video. Below is a video by Oasis for their track "D'you know what I mean" and this show the kind of style I want in terms of costume and attitude.

Meeting with the Actors

Today, 14th October, I had a meeting with my actors for my music video. The meeting was approximately twenty minutes long and we discussed:
  • Times and Dates for shooting
  • Props
  • Clothing/Accessories for each actor
  • The narrative and the main aim for the video
  • The meaning of the video and how it would be incorporated into the music video
  •  Locations
  • The chords, riffs and lyrics of the song
  • Who can actually play an instrument needed
  • Agreement to participate

The actors for my music video are as follows:

Alex Morris - Lead Singer (Ian Brown) and Character in the narrative
Joshua Howie - Bassist (Mani)
John Pattinson - Guitarist (Squire)
Michael Rowell - Drummer (Reni)

After our meeting, I went to one of my locations to do some test footage and recce shots. I will also visit my other locations to do more recce shots and to assess the location and make sure it within health and safety regulations.

Inspiration - Bands

In order to create my own music video, I needed to gather inspiration from similar bands of that genre. Above are a the main bands that will inspire me in the creation of my own video. My song for my music video is by The Stone Roses so I took their style and used their original video for ideas for my own. The Beatles are my favorite band and they have inspired bands such as Oasis, Beady Eye and Arctic Monkeys so I decided to look into them in detail and apply some of their ideas to my own theories. Oasis are the main band for the inspiration around my video. The style of the band will be reflected highly in my video through the use of mise en scene and instruments. I also did some background research on Liam Gallagher, the front man of Oasis, and found out that one of his biggest inspirations is Ian Brown, the front man of The Stone Roses. Using this information, I can create an appropriate video that will fit in with the genre and also reflect the band in a similar way as they do in their own video's.

Audience Research Feedback

Above is the finished video for my audience feedback questions. In order to record their answers, I booked out a camera from my college and gathered several different individuals to participate in my questionnaire.

I first organised with each individual a meeting place and time in which I would record them answering my alternative rock questions. Once this had been arranged, we met and I would ensure all health and safety precautions had been covered.

After that, I began the recording. I explained firstly to the individuals what the questionnaire would consist of and made sure that they understood each question. Ensuring that the individuals were clear on instructions, I began to film there feedback on each question.

Next, after all the filming had been done and footage had good footage had been obtained, I transferred the clips from the memory card of my video recorded into Final Cut HD. All clips were up to a good quality and with that, I organised them into a sequence, fitting them accordingly with each question asked.

To add a more alternative rock feeling, I also used snippets of several music tracks by alternative rock artists and used these snippets over the questions that would be displayed in the video. I think this feedback video turned out pretty well, although the video did have a glitch and has no footage after 4:30. I could not figure out why the video had done this and had no choice but to upload the video anyway.

Audience Research Questions

Before I can interview an audience asking them questions that I have prepared about alternative rock as a genre, I have to make sure that the audience are able to understand the questions and would be able to give full appropriate answers in relation to the questions. Below are the questions that I will ask and the order in which I will ask them:

1. What does the term 'alternative rock' mean to you as an individual?

2. Which bands would you associate with the genre of alternative rock?

3. In terms of props, what would you expect to see in an alternative rock music video?

4. What type of locations would you expect to see in an alternative rock music video?

5. Are you a fan of alternative rock and if so, what bands associated with the genre do you like personally?

6. Style is an essential aspect in music videos. What type of clothing would you associate with the genre?

7. Considering the way in which the video is recorded, what camera angles and lighting would you expect to see?

8. My chosen band for my own music video is The Stone Roses. What is your personal opinion of them?

Record Label

Above is my record label that I designed myself. The paint splatter background was an idea that I took from The Stone Roses and their famous paint splattered themes. By creating my own logo, I have given my music video it's own identity instead of using an existing record label.

Lyrics Breakdown

Lyrics Breakdown - I Wanna Be Adored (The Stone Roses)

Above is my lyrics breakdown for the song "I Wanna Be Adored" by The Stone Roses. I have applied my ideas to the lyrics and explained what will happen in my video at every part in the song.

In relation to the meaning of the song, many people believe the song is about the devil and religion. The lyrics "I don't have to sell my soul, he's already in me" could link to the fact of supposedly selling your soul to the devil i.e. becoming evil or sinning which in this case could be the fame. In my video, I will use the evil concept as the drug abuse by the main character.  For the lyrics "I Wanna Be Adored" my video will be based around the idea that the main character wants to be forgiven for his sins of using drugs and wants to be adored again.

Magazine Advertisement - The Killers

Above is a magazine advertisement for The Killers "All The Greatest Hits Live From The Royal Albert Hall".  The first thing that attracts the eye to the advertisement is the outstanding title of the band. Not only does the size of the text grab the audiences' attention, but it is the iconic logo for the band and is shown on every advertisement/CD/DVD associated with the band. Secondly, the picture of the Royal Albert Hall in the center stands out against the purple/lilac background. Using such an iconic building on an advertisement could attract other potential customers who would normally not listen to the band.

Below this, we see more text that says "featuring" and continues to state some well known songs by the band. This technique is used to attract a wider audience, not only fans of the band. A stranger or someone who does not listen to The Killers could recognise the title of the song and therefore spark interest in them to find out more or even buy the album. At the bottom of the advert, a contrasting white text stands out bold against a black background, stating the release date for the CD/DVD. However, the colour scheme of the advertisement is very typical of The Killers. Their previous album, Day and Age, has the exact same mosaic background as the one used in this advertisement. The background alone is very eye capturing and a unique album cover associated with The Killers, therefore it could instantly capture a viewer's attention and they could relate to the advert straight away.

Magazine Analysis - Stereophonics

This is a magazine advertisement for Stereophonics' album Keep Calm and Carry on. This is a very typical advert for an album, as it tells the audience when the album will be out, on what formats the album is available and the official website for the band. The first thing that capture's the audience's eye is the band, Stereophonics, sitting at the table. This certain aspect of the advertisement is central and dominates the full picture. Using the band in their own advertisement supports Andrew Goodwin's theory of 'star image' of using the star e.g. Stereophonics to promote their material and boost profits. I also noticed that Kelly Jones, the front-man of the band, is the only member facing towards the front. This detail could have been added deliberately to attract an audience as they would recognise Kelly Jones and may then be attracted to the advertisement, introducing the potential to buy the album.

The colour palette is quite dull toned, consisting of blacks, blues and white. By using such colours that co-ordinate together easily then using bold black and white text means the advertisement will be attractive to the eye. The black font at the top contrasts against the light sky to make the name of the band stand out and similarly at the bottom, the white font contrasts against the blue sea to make sure the audience can see clearly when the album is available to buy.

The overall construction and colours of the advertisement are typical of an alternative rock band, making it useful for consumers who like that genre to identify the type of music advertised in the poster. "Keep Calm and Carry On" links in directly to the image used within the advertisement. Although the band are sat in the middle of the sea, they are keeping calm and carrying on with what they are doing.

Permission Request

Before I could use the track "I Wanna Be Adored" by the Stone Roses, I first had to seek permission from the Stone Roses, or this would be seen as copyright infringement. Firstly, I e-mailed Roses List Request to ask permission to use the Stone Roses' track. The original record label for the band was Silvertone Records however, they went into liquidation and are no longer available to contact. I research the internet and finally found Roses List Request. This turned out to be another e-mail address I could contact and is the main mailing list for The Stone Roses. Below is my evidence to show this.

After that, I also decided to use Twitter to ask the official Stone Roses for their permission to use their track, I Wanna Be Adored. The evidence for this is below:

Music Video Analysis - The La's (There She Goes)

The La's were an English alternative rock band from Liverpool and were mainly active around later 1980's, hitting big with a track called "There She Goes". The video for "There She Goes" opens with a creative editing technique, accompanied by a iconic guitar riff. A medium long shot of the guitarist is shown within a low angle shot of another guitarist with a colour palette of pinks and oranges, which is continued throughout the video. Still within the shot of the guitarist, we then see a close up of a female, who the audience then can relate the title of "There She Goes" to and assume this is the female that the singer is singing about.

A lot of close up angled shots of the instruments are used, normally when the instrument dominates that part of the song. Been an alternative rock band, this is a common convention of displaying the band/artist' instrument(s). The overall video use's a lot of varied and creative camera shots such high/low angles, zooming out angled shots, close ups, rotating long shots and zooming pans. The use of such angles makes the video interesting and keeps the attention of the audience on the band and the video. Throughout the video, there are several overlaid images of the female that we first saw at the beginning of the video which may have been used to keep reference to the female and the lyrics of the song directed at her. Laura Mulvey's theory of the "male gaze" can also be applied to this video. Several pans of the females' legs are shown and close ups of her face and eyes are also repeated to attract a male's attention.

Editing techniques have been emphasized greatly within this video. The brightness and contrast of the colours have been changed to allow the colours to stand out and highlight the band, captivating the audiences' eye and keeping them interested. The front man of the band, Lee Mavers, is constantly on screen and in the viewers face more so than any other member of the band. This is simply because he is the front man and the one who the audience wants to see. The song is basically a song about a male who's lost the female he loves however, other people have interpreted the song as a reference to heroin and the female representing the drug.

Music Video Analysis - Primal Scream (Country Girl)

The main reason I picked "Country Girl" by Primal Scream is because the whole video contradicts the stereotype of a 'country girl'. The song is a very upbeat track and this is shown through the action within the video and the use of vibrant, bright colours. In the actual video, we only see the front man of the group, Bobby Gillespie. This may have been done to draw the attention of the viewers more to the narrative of the video than the band.

Throughout the video, the audience is given the impression that this female is no ordinary 'country girl' but totally contradicts the stereotype of a sweet, innocent girl. Several references are made to show the contradiction. For example, 0:26, there is a close up shot of the female's hand which seems to be bandaged up with blood on, suggesting she has either been in a fight or cut her hand. Another example is 0:58, we see the female drinking Jack Daniel's from the bottle, acting like more of a rough type than an innocent person. Mise en scene is a huge factor in the target audience for this video. Through the full video, the female is seen in very little clothing. At the beginning, we see her wearing a short, red dress that shows off her chest a lot. We then see her sat on the bedroom floor, taking drugs in only her underwear, which will probably be very appealing to the male eye.

The country theme is constantly sufficed in the video as well. At 0:51, we see 'Country Girl' scrolled across Bobby in rope, representing a lasso. Mise en scene also shows the country theme through the use of a cowboy hat, cowboy style boots, denim shorts and jacket and line dancing. The lightining towards the end of the video changes to a dark theme which could reflect the females rebellious attitude. Overall, the narrative of the video is all about a country girl who's came to the city to have fun and cause trouble.

Music Video Analysis - The Killers (When you were young)

The first few seconds of the video "When you were young" by The Killers has no sound but a single drumbeat, representative of a heartbeat, which then matches the switching shots between a worried looking man and the back of a woman on top of a hill. From this, the audience can tell that the woman has gone missing and the man is trying to find her however, we cannot yet tell why she has gone missing but the narrative of the whole video does tell us. Throughout the entire video, the theme of religion is displayed boldly. Firstly, we see the girl in white kneeling beside a white cross that overlooks the city. The framing of the camera at 1:04 makes the cross look dominant to the rest of the shot, suggesting the power of God and that she's gone there looking for answers. Shortly after that shot, we see the girl again, surrounded by candles and holding prayer beads. From this, the audience can see the video has gone back in time as the location has changed from the hill top. Also, which is very typically expected of alternative rock, the band The Killers are actually playing during the video and the camera makes sure they are still shown a lot in conjunction with the narrative party of the video. The lighting centered around the band is quite low, with dark colours, accompanied by close ups and extreme close ups of the band . This could suggest that something bad has happened or is going to happen. This can further be backed up, as the lyrics describe "you sit there in your, heartache" which the audience than can understand Brandon is relating to the girl.

There is also a lot of direct links between the lyrics and the camera shots and the action going on within them. For example, when Brandon sings "he doesn't look a thing like Jesus" the male bends down to help the female up, displaying a cross behind him, suggesting the female see's him as her Jesus. Also, at 2:54 the lyrics say "and sometimes you close your eyes" as the female walks out of the door, crying with her eyes closed tightly. However, some use of disjuncture is also displayed in the video, to a certain extent. As the lyrics "on the back of a hurricane, that started turning" the camera shows the female's husband in bed with another woman and the female witnesses this. Although the lyrics do not literally link to the shot, the meaning is still conveyed and put across, describing the situation as a "hurricane".

Laura Mulvey's theory of the male gaze also appears in the video, at 2.54. As the lyrics talk about the "devil's water", we see the male's eyes flicker down to the female's legs as she pours "the devils water" onto them. Because we assume the male as a holy man, the devils water could mean corruption and sin for him, hence the gazing at the female's legs.

Around 4.43, we see more ,medium longshots and an upbeat in the song. The lyrics "when you were young" are repeated, suggesting that everything that happened is in the past and the upbeat of the song now as oppose to the duller beat earlier could be saying the female has moved on and everything is better than what is was.

Music Video Analysis - Ian Brown (Keep What Ya Got)

"Keep What Ya Got" by Ian Brown is a very typical video of the artist himself. Since going solo in his career, a lot of Ian's own material is usually accompanied by a video that's based around a materialistic city setting e.g. Manchester, Liverpool, London etc. and this video is no exception. I particularly like this video due to the build up on the entrance of a another well known artist into the video.

Throughout the video, especially at the beginning, a variety of establishing shots are used to show the city surroundings and buildings. This technique allows the viewer to understand where the video is based and sometimes is crucial where meaning of the song is concerned. The first shot is a continuous medium close up of Ian Brown, probably used to show the viewers the artist and immediately attracting an audience who like Ian Brown. Direct links between the lyrics and the shot onscreen are also made frequently within the video. For example, we see a blocking shot of Ian Brown looking through some black gates to the lyrics "
Yesterday when Heaven's gates

I contemplate, they seem so far" hence the gates and the distance he is stood from them.

There is also the mystery of the other male in the video. We don't see his face at the beginning, just several pan shots of the back of the male's head, keeping the audience in suspense. However, viewers who have payed close attention and are a fan of the male in question, would have realised who it was from the medium close up of the male's hand in which a ring is shown; a ring commonly associated with the male and this branding his own personal identity.

At 2:59 we see Noel Gallagher and Ian Brown greet each other when meeting on a corner. The use of two huge artist' in the same video, who are friends, will be very appealing to their target audience. As seen in his previous videos, the majority of camera shots focus on Ian Brown himself, to show his importance and dominance as a solo artist. The video does not really have a linear narrative but more of a hidden meaning, which I think could be either to do with God or with Ian's reflection on  the Stone Roses splitting e.g. "Keep what ya got, by giving it all away".
